Intel Processors Accelerate Deployment of Functional Safety-Compliant Applications

Intel announced select SKUs in the Intel Atom® x6000E series of processors have obtained IEC61508 SIL2 and ISO13849 certification from TÜV SÜD, a certification agency. With this certification, designers can accelerate development and deployment of industrial applications that must adhere to strict functional safety (FuSa) standards. 

“The Intel Atom® x6000E series of processors were designed for our industrial customers with safety and security in mind. The functional safety certification allows customers to consolidate safety- and non-safety-related workloads at the edge onto a single compute platform, reducing overhead,” says John Healy, Intel vice president of the Internet of Things (IoT) Group and general manager of Platform Management and Customer Engineering.

Developing systems based on products certified to comply with FuSa requirements helps organizations speed application deployment. Intel worked with TÜV SÜD to certify Intel Atom® x6427FE and Intel Atom® x6200FE processors according to IEC61508 functional safety specification (up to safety integrity level 2 (SIL2) and ISO13849 Cat.3 PL=d). The certification represents a significant benefit for customers in terms of reduced bill of materials and time to market.

The FuSa-certified Intel Atom x6000E processors1 are targeted at consumer and industrial applications where automatic protections are in place to improve the functional safety of market segments. These segments include stationary robotic controllers, autonomous mobile robots (last-mile delivery, mobile servant robots, physical assistant robots, person-carrier robots), transportation (passenger information systems, fleet management and signaling systems) and avionics (glass cockpit, flight navigation and communications).

The Intel Atom x6000E processors1 obtained IEC61508 SIL2 and ISO13849 Cat.3 PL=d as a single chip solution. The certificate validates the capability to achieve up to IEC61508 SIL3 HFT=1 and ISO13849 Cat.4 PL=e thanks to the SC3 systematic capability, combining two Intel Atom x6000E processors in dual-chip architecture, which represents an “easy plug-and-use” solution with minimum external interface and reducing software complexity.

The scope of the FuSa certification includes the Intel® Safety Island integrated into the processor and a set of software components implementing state-of-the-art diagnostic measures, including software test libraries, proof tests and on-demand cross-compare.

The Intel Atom x6000E Series processors deliver CPU and graphics performance with integrated IoT features, real-time performance, manageability, security and functional safety.

CES 2021 Coverage: A Virtual Show Floor

I write this on the final day of CES 2021, and I expect CES will never be the same. It will not revert back to what it once was. I also cannot imagine it stays a totally virtual show; in doing so, I feel it would fail. Does that mean I think the 2021 show was a failure? No, not at all. In fact, it was a very good event, particularly in light of the medical and political pandemic that we have been enduring.

What a difference a year makes. One year ago, those of us who cover and attend CES were going from one press conference to the next; this year, we are at home going from link to link. Confusing and challenging, yes, but there are some advantages: no masks, only five steps to get to a restroom, being able to have three of four events or more displaying on your screens at the same time and being able to download press kits as needed. So far, many new devices are being introduced, but of course, they are all online, so you wonder if some of them really exist or are truly operational as yet.
